3'10" x 22'6" Afghan Ziegler Runner Rug | Earthy Brown & Sage Green All-Over Floral | Brand New

A 3'10" x 22'6" runner is a piece you buy for one specific stretch of floor, and very few are woven this long in a genuinely wide 46" width. This one is hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation, with an all-over Ziegler floral drawn across a soft earthy brown field and framed by a broad ivory border. It has never been used, the pile is full, the selvedges are tight and the fringe is untouched. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity that records its size, material, weave and origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first full-length photograph was taken under cool studio lighting, which reads the field slightly grey. The close-up photographs, shot in natural light, show the truer tone: a warm earthy brown with camel and mocha movement through it. This is a lighting difference in the photography only, not a variation in the rug itself.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a repeating all-over composition rather than a medallion, which is the right choice at this length: the eye keeps moving instead of hunting for a center. Large split palmettes alternate with 8 petal rosettes and tulip-shaped blossoms, connected by a faint lattice of vines and curled serrated leaves that you only pick up once you are standing over it. Small birds and stylized vessels are tucked into the drawing along the border line, a quiet detail typical of the better Ziegler workshops. The main border runs ivory with a repeating flower and leaf meander, flanked by two narrow guard stripes of little boxed rosettes, and the corners resolve cleanly where the border turns. Nothing is rigidly mirrored, so the runner reads handmade from end to end.

A Muted Earthy Brown and Sage Green Palette

The ground is an earthy brown that sits between taupe and mocha, with soft abrash moving through it so the color breathes across 22'6" instead of going flat. The main motifs are worked in sage green, the dominant secondary color, with pale celadon and dove grey shading inside the leaves. Ivory and cream carry the border and the blossom centers and give the whole piece its lift. Then come the accents used sparingly and to real effect: terracotta and rust outlining the palmettes, small squares of muted slate blue in the guard stripes, and touches of soft brick red at the rosette hearts. There is no high contrast anywhere, which is why this runner settles into oak floors, stone tile and painted wainscot without competing with anything already in the space.

Hand-Knotted in Afghanistan: Ziegler Weaving Quality

Afghanistan is now one of the few places producing hand-knotted work of this calibre at this scale, and the Ziegler style, named for the 19th century trading house that commissioned all-over floral designs for Western interiors, is what its best weaving houses are known for. The wool here is the point: hand-spun, high in lanolin, cut to a medium pile that already has a light sheen and will only gain luster underfoot. The knotting is even, the rows are straight over more than 22 feet, and the back shows a firm, regular weave with no drawn-in edges, which is the hardest thing to hold on a narrow loom run this long. It is a proper Oriental rug built for traffic, and at this length it was made for a long hallway, a gallery corridor or an upstairs landing run where a standard 8 or 10 foot runner leaves the floor looking unfinished.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
