5' x 5'2" Round Oriental Rug | Rare Scalloped Petal Shape | Ivory Floral Medallion | Fine Wool

Round rugs are uncommon to begin with, and a hand-knotted round cut as a scalloped flower is rarer still, because the weaver has to plan every curve of the outline on the loom before the first knot goes in. This 5' x 5'2" piece is exactly that: a petal-edged circle in fine wool on a cotton foundation, with a soft ivory field carrying a tiered floral medallion and a wide rose border that follows each scallop around the perimeter. The pile is even and the hand is supple, the fringe is original and hand-tied, and the back photographed next to a ruler shows a tight, regular knot line with the drawing reading cleanly from the reverse. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a small rosette in sage and ivory, ringed by a terracotta medallion that steps outward in lobed points, each one outlined in dark navy so the silhouette stays crisp against the pale ground. Around it the ivory field fills with curling vine, feathered leaves, rounded palmettes and small paired blossoms, drawn loosely enough to breathe rather than crowd. A ring of ivory cartouche-like lobes separates field from border, and the wide rose border repeats a rhythm of four-petal flowers, scrolling acanthus and star-filled roundels, one motif landing in each scallop so the shape and the pattern agree with one another. Thin navy guard stripes trace the outer curve and hold the whole composition together.

Ivory Ground with Rose, Navy and Sage

The dominant color is a warm ivory, closer to clotted cream than white, and it takes light well on a wood floor. Against it the border runs a dusty rose that shifts toward terracotta and salmon depending on the angle of the pile. Inside the drawing there is far more color than a first glance suggests: deep navy and near-black outlines, teal and soft petrol blue in the leaves, sage and celadon green in the smaller flowerheads, pale grey-blue in the medallion, and small punctuation marks of brick red scattered through the field. Those accents keep the rug from reading as a plain neutral while the ivory ground keeps the overall effect calm.

Hand-Knotted in Pakistan

Pakistan's workshop weavers have built a long reputation for finely drawn traditional florals on cotton warps, and shaped commissions like this one are where that skill shows most, since a scalloped outline gives the weaver no straight edge to correct against. The knot count here is high enough to carry curved vine and fine outlining without the pattern breaking up, which is the practical test of any traditional Oriental rug. Wool pile over a cotton foundation gives it weight and stability, the selvages are tightly wrapped along every curve, and the piece lies flat. At roughly 5 feet across it suits a foyer, a reading corner or a round table, and it sits comfortably among our other hand-knotted Oriental rugs.
