6' x 17'5" Chobi Ziegler Gallery Runner Rug | Chocolate Brown All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Fine Wool

At 6' x 17'5" this is a gallery runner rather than a hall runner: wide enough to seat furniture on, long enough to run the length of a corridor, a long entry gallery or the open side of a great room where a standard 2'6" width would look lost. It is hand-knotted in Pakistan with hand-spun, naturally dyed wool, the weave and finish that put this style of Oriental rug at the top of today's hand-knotted production. The pile is clipped low and even, the selvedges are hand-wrapped, and the piece is brand new and never used. It ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The full studio photograph was shot under cooler light and the field there reads slightly plum. The floor and close-up photographs show the true color: a deep chocolate brown with the natural tonal variation of hand-spun, plant-dyed wool.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler all-over floral layout with no medallion, so the drawing repeats calmly down the full 17'5" without a single focal point fighting the length of the room. Large open palmettes and sunflower rosettes alternate with serrated acanthus leaves and long curling cloudband leaves, all joined by a thin ivory vine that loops from one end of the runner to the other. Small 5 petal rosettes with red centers fill the gaps between the larger blooms, and the scale is generous: the biggest palmettes measure close to a foot across, which is exactly what makes this drawing read well in a wide hallway where you see the rug from above. The main border runs a meandering vine of palmettes and paired leaves, framed on both sides by narrow apricot guard stripes filled with small rosettes and stylized birds, and the plain brown outer band closes it off cleanly against the ivory fringe.

Color: Chocolate Brown, Gold and Sage Green

The ground is a dark chocolate brown that shifts between espresso and a warm walnut tone as the light moves across the pile, the abrash you only get from hand-spun yarn dyed in small lots. Against it the drawing is worked in wheat gold, soft camel and pale beige, with the larger palmettes shaded from deep apricot at the edges to near ivory at the center so each flower has visible depth rather than flat outline. The main border is a muted sage green, dusty and slightly grey, which cools the whole composition and keeps the gold from turning brassy, and the guard stripes on either side of it are a soft apricot. Accents are used sparingly and to real effect: small brick red and rust flower centers, a few dark charcoal outlines, and touches of celadon inside the leaf tips. It is a warm, low-contrast palette that sits comfortably with walnut and oak floors, brass hardware, cream plaster walls and darker wood furniture. You can see the rest of our brown hand-knotted rugs if you are matching to an existing scheme.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Chobi Ziegler rugs are woven by master weavers in and around Peshawar, Pakistan, a weaving region that has spent the last few decades refining this one style until it became the benchmark for new hand-knotted work. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dyes drawn from walnut husk, madder root, indigo and pomegranate rind that give these rugs their soft, already mellowed color. The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, so the yarn takes dye unevenly and the field breathes instead of sitting flat, and it is knotted on a cotton foundation and then washed and clipped by hand. Weaving a 6' x 17'5" runner is a serious commitment of loom time, since the loom has to be strung and tensioned for the full length and the border has to stay true over more than 17 feet with no cumulative drift. This one holds its lines from end to end, the sides are straight, the pile is even in height, and the back is tight and legible with the knot rows clearly defined.
