7'10" x 10' Pakistan Oriental Rug | Versacci Baroque Medallion on Black | Brand New

This 7'10" x 10' piece is a hand-knotted wool Oriental rug woven in Pakistan in the Versacci pattern, a European baroque drawing of acanthus scrollwork and a round floral medallion set on a near black ground. It is brand new and never used, with a full, evenly clipped pile and clean ivory fringes at both ends, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity. The proportions land squarely in the most usable of all 8x10 area rugs, large enough to carry a full seating group or a 6 to 8 seat dining table without dominating the room.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a round ivory medallion filled with a burgundy rosette, ribbon scrolls and small sprays of roses, ringed by a banded gold surround and 4 small floral roundels at the compass points. Around that sits a squared cartouche frame with a beaded inner stripe, and beyond it the black field runs wild with large curling acanthus leaves, scrolling vines and open rosettes worked in gold. Two long ivory panels, one at each end of the field, carry loose floral bouquets and a central shield cartouche, the classic Savonnerie device that keeps a busy field from closing in. The main border is a deep black band of the same leafwork, framed inside and out by gold guard stripes of oval and bar motifs over burgundy. Everything is drawn symmetrically and the 4 corners resolve cleanly, which is the first thing to check on a design this ambitious.

Black, Gold and Beige Color Palette

The field reads as a dense, matte black that photographs almost like ink and makes every other color step forward. Over it, the acanthus work moves through honey gold, antique brass and warm brown, with shading so graded that single leaves look lit from one side. The medallion, end panels and cartouche frames are beige to cream, and inside them the florals bring soft rose pink, dusty sage and a few olive greens. Burgundy does the outlining work: thin bands under the guard stripes, the rosette at the heart of the medallion and small accents in the corner scrolls. The wool has a high sheen, so the gold shifts noticeably between warm and pale depending on which direction you walk the room. Ivory fringes and a black selvage close the ends.

Woven in Pakistan and Built to Last

Pakistan is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted work of this drawing standard at real scale, and this rug shows why. The back is tight and regular, the wool pile sits on a cotton foundation, and the pile has been clipped low enough for the curved lines of the leafwork to stay crisp rather than blur, the way a machine copy always does. Highland wool takes dye deeply and wears slowly, which is why rugs like this hold up under dining chairs and traffic lanes for decades. Among Oriental rugs in this size class, a black ground baroque medallion in perfect, unused condition is not something you come across often.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
