This is a bold, finely drawn floral piece: an ink-black ground packed edge to edge with roses, peonies and daisies, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with a small woven cartouche in the outer border, the weaver's own mark on a workshop piece. It measures 8'1" x 10', a true room size that sits comfortably in the same footprint as most 8x10 area rugs, and it has never been used, so the pile stands full and the colors are exactly as woven. The wool takes light unusually well here, giving the blossoms a slight sheen against the matte black field. Design and Motifs

The drawing belongs to the English garden family, a European floral idiom translated into knotted pile: full open cabbage roses, tight rosebuds, star-shaped daisies, small 5 petal blossoms and long feathered fern fronds, all scattered in a dense all-over floral layout with no medallion and no open space. Instead of a repeating grid, the bouquets are arranged to read like a real flower bed seen from above, which keeps the eye moving across the field rather than settling in the center. The border system is where the detail work shows: a wide outer band carries its own procession of rose bouquets, flanked by narrow ivory and green guard stripes drawn in a fine arrowhead and sawtooth rhythm, with a thin salmon-and-burgundy ribbon line separating each band. The signature cartouche sits low in one border, framed in ivory against the black.

A Black Field Carrying Burgundy, Green and Blue

The ground is a deep, near-ink black, and that choice does all the work: every flower reads brighter than it would on red or ivory. The roses run through a full range, from deep burgundy and wine at the centers out to dusty rose, coral pink and pale blush on the outer petals, with ivory and cream blossoms breaking up the pinks so the field never looks monotone. Foliage covers the greens named on the spec sheet, from dark pine and bottle green in the leaves to a softer sage and olive in the fern fronds. The blues are used sparingly and deliberately: small slate and powder-blue pansy-like flowers tucked between the roses, with a matching cool blue picked up in the guard stripes.
