8'10" x 11'8" Vintage Persian Rug | Pastel Light Gray All Over Floral | 1950s Low Pile
This is a genuine piece of the 1950s, woven in Persia and used in a home for decades before it came to us, and that history is exactly why it looks the way it does. Seventy years of light and footsteps have pulled the dyes back to pastel light gray, beige and taupe, leaving the drawing visible as fine brown outlines across the whole field. The pile is low and evenly worn, the handle is soft and supple, and the structure is stable with no repairs needed. At 8'10" x 11'8" it covers a standard room the way 9x12 Persian rugs are meant to, with furniture sitting fully on the wool. Every rug we ship, including this one, travels with a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft, washed out look and the lighter and darker patches you see in the field are the honest character of a low pile vintage rug, not photographic error. The pile is short and worn evenly across the surface, the sides and ends are intact, and the foundation is sound. This is a pre-owned rug sold as a vintage piece, and it is professionally cleaned, steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic all over floral composition with no medallion, so the pattern reads continuously from end to end and can be placed in either direction. Thin scrolling vines link large palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and broad curled leaves, with smaller blossoms and buds filling the ground between them, and the close-up photograph shows how the brown outlines still hold the whole drawing together even where the color has faded. The layout is mirrored along both axes, a mark of a properly cartooned workshop design rather than improvised village work. Five bands frame the field: a wide ivory main border of leaves, palmettes and interlaced vine, flanked by narrow floral guard stripes and a fine rosette meander, with stepped corner resolutions that are drawn cleanly rather than cut off.
A Pastel Light Gray and Ivory Palette
Color is the real story here. The ground has settled into a pale greige, a pastel light gray warmed by sand and taupe, with slightly bleached vertical passages where the wool has worn thinnest and softer putty tones where it is fuller. Against that, the main border has gone almost ivory, which gives the rug a visible frame even at a distance. The pattern itself is drawn in deep coffee brown and charcoal, the only truly dark values in the piece, and they are joined by quiet accents of muted sage green, dusty olive and the occasional faint apricot blush inside a palmette. There is no bright red or strong blue anywhere, which is what makes this one of those rare neutral beige and ivory rugs that sits comfortably with gray upholstery, pale oak, linen and contemporary furniture while still being entirely hand-knotted and old.
Persian Origin and Weaving Quality
The rug was hand-knotted in Persia in the 1950s on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, using the asymmetric knot and a curvilinear floral cartoon of the kind central Persian town workshops produced for export in that period. The back photograph tells you most of what you need to know about the weave: tight, even rows, a regular knot count across the 12 inch ruler, straight selvages and no bowing, which is the sign of a well-tensioned loom and experienced hands rather than a hurried commercial job. Wool of this era was hand-sorted and still carries enough lanolin to stay soft after seven decades of use, which is why the surface feels silky underfoot instead of dry. If you want to understand how pieces like this are placed in time, our guide on how to date an oriental rug walks through the same clues we used here: dye behavior, wear pattern, foundation and the drawing of the border.
