8'4" x 9'4" Peshawar Chobi Rug | Soltanabad All Over Floral Design | Green & Rust

Measuring 8'4" x 9'4", this is a brand new, hand-knotted Peshawar Chobi in the Soltanabad manner, woven with hand-spun natural wool on a cotton foundation and never put on a floor. The near square proportion is the first thing you notice: only a foot separates the width from the length, so the rug reads as a calm, centered block of olive green rather than a long rectangle, which is exactly what makes it work under a square seating arrangement or a round table. Chobi weaving takes its name from the muted, wood-toned palette produced by natural dyes, and this piece is a good example of it, with soft greens and warm coral tones that look aged from the day they leave the loom. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine-made reproduction, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting the size, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Soltanabad all over floral design: tall flowering vine stems rise in columns from the lower edge and repeat across the full width, each one carrying broad serrated leaves, open palmettes and small four petal blossoms. At the center of the field a single lobed rosette sits within a mirrored arrangement of feathered leaves, giving the eye a resting point without the rug ever committing to a formal medallion. The drawing is deliberately loose and botanical, with stems that bend and cross instead of repeating mechanically, which is the signature of this design family. The main border is wide and generous, filled with large cartouche-shaped palmettes linked by a curling vine, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of alternating rosettes and leaf sprigs. A plain darker outer edge closes the composition and keeps the busy border from bleeding into the room.

A Soft Green Field With Rust, Coral and Gold

The ground is an olive to sage green that carries a distinct brown undertone, and it shifts gently in horizontal bands across the field, the natural abrash of hand-spun wool taking dye at slightly different rates. Against it the vinework is drawn in warm apricot and pale gold, with flower heads in coral, salmon pink and a deep brick red that supplies the only strong contrast on the rug. Scattered leaves pick up a duller moss tone that ties back into the field. The border moves in the opposite direction, from straw gold and honey through soft celadon in the palmette fills, so the frame reads noticeably lighter than the center and lifts the whole piece. The outer edge and the selvage are a plain cocoa brown, and the fringe is natural ivory. Buyers shopping green area rugs will find this one unusually easy to place, since the green is earthy rather than saturated and sits comfortably with cream, walnut, brass and leather.

Peshawar Weaving and Build Quality

Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, has become one of the most respected centers for hand-knotted Chobi and Ziegler style weaving, and workshops there are now the main source for this whole category of muted, naturally dyed floral rugs. The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, which is why the pile takes dye unevenly and why the surface has a slight sheen and irregular texture instead of a flat, uniform face. The back, visible in the photographs, shows an even, tightly packed knot line with clean pattern definition and straight sides, and the rug lies flat without wave or curl. Weight and handle are moderate, so it drapes well and sits properly under furniture. This is new production, never walked on, and with wool of this grade the pile will burnish rather than wear thin over the next few decades.
