9' x 12' Ziegler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Soltanabad All-Over Design | Coral Rust & Beige, Brand New

This is a full room-size Ziegler Chobi measuring 9' x 12', hand-knotted in Peshawar with a natural wool pile on a cotton foundation and drawn in the Soltanabad manner that collectors know from late 19th century workshop production. The weave is dense but supple, the pile sheared at a medium height that lets the coral rust ground show its natural wool variation, and the handle is heavy enough to lie dead flat without a pad fighting it. It has never been used, it has no wear, no repair and no stains, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. As a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a machine copy, every knot here was tied by hand, and the slight breathing in the field color is the proof.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all-over design with no central medallion: a lattice of thin vine scrolls climbing a central spine, hung with large serrated palmettes, open 8 petal rosettes, small four-lobed blossoms and slender leaf sprays. Two crowned palmette cartouches sit on the vertical axis, each one filled with a small red flower head outlined in grey, and the corner palmettes are drawn slightly differently from one another, which is exactly what you want to see in handwork. The main border is wide and generous, running a meandering red vine with alternating angular blossoms and small tulip forms, framed on both sides by a distinctive checkerboard minor border of 4 square rosettes in red and grey on beige. A narrow rust outer band closes the whole composition, and the ivory fringe is hand-tied and even along both ends.

A Coral Rust Field Against Beige and Sage

The ground is a warm coral rust, closer to terracotta than to blood red, and it shifts gently between brick and a deeper brown-red as the pile catches light from different directions. Against it the drawing reads in soft gold, tan and cream, with the larger palmettes shaded from butter beige into a deeper wheat tone so they sit forward of the field rather than flat on it. The star-shaped leaf sprays and the fine outlines around several rosettes are a muted sage that photographs as a soft grey-blue, and that cool note is what keeps the rug from going entirely warm. The border ground is a pale sand beige with brick red vinework and grey and red rosette squares, so the palette stays within four families: rust, beige, brown and sage. It works with cream walls, walnut furniture, brass and natural linen without asking the rest of the room to change.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Chobi Tradition

Peshawar in northern Pakistan is where the Ziegler Chobi revival is woven today, and the best of that production is genuinely good work: handspun wool, muted plant-based dye palettes, and Soltanabad cartoons carried forward from the original Ziegler workshop commissions that supplied European and American houses more than a century ago. Chobi describes that soft, low-contrast dye character, and this piece has it. The back shows a regular, disciplined knot line with straight rows and tight, even selvedges, the ends are finished cleanly, and the rug hangs square.
