8'6" x 10'6" Indian Oriental Rug | Vegetable Dyed Beige All-Over Floral | Excellent Condition
This 8'6" x 10'6" rug is a hand-knotted wool piece made in India, drawn in the calm traditional idiom that sells faster than anything else we carry: a pale beige field, big soft palmettes, and a wide ivory border that keeps the whole thing quiet. The pile is full and even across all 4 corners, the selvages are tight, and the burgundy outer edge gives the ivory ground a clean finish without pulling attention to itself. Vegetable dyed yarn is why the colors read as muted rather than bright, and it is also why this piece will mellow gracefully rather than go flat. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a machine-made copy, it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field carries no medallion at all. Instead it uses an all-over floral layout built from a thin vine that loops the length of the rug and feeds broad lotus palmettes, serrated leaves and small 8 petal rosettes. The palmettes alternate in scale, large ones at the sides and smaller cusped blossoms down the center column, so the eye keeps moving instead of locking onto one point. Tiny burgundy and slate blue flecks sit inside the flower heads and do all the drawing work at close range, visible in the detail photos. Three frames enclose the field: a narrow flower-and-dot guard stripe, a plain camel band that acts as a breathing space, and a wide ivory main border filled with sage green rosettes linked by cream arabesque scrollwork. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a border this open is not easy to pull off.
A Study in Beige, Ivory and Camel
The ground is a warm beige that photographs closer to oatmeal under showroom light and closer to cream in daylight. Over it the drawing runs through camel, honey gold and a dusty tan, with the large leaves sitting one or two shades deeper than the field so the pattern reads as texture from standing height. The main border lightens to ivory, which is what makes the rug feel larger than its 8'6" x 10'6" footprint. Accents are deliberately sparse: muted sage green in the border rosettes, flecks of slate blue in the flower centers, and small points of burgundy repeated in the guard stripes and along the outer edge. Nothing here is saturated, so this sits comfortably in the beige and ivory group and works against oak floors, white walls, and furniture you do not want to replace.
Hand-Knotted in India
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without hedging. The weaving centers around Agra and Bhadohi inherited the classical all-over floral repertoire, then paired it with naturally dyed handspun wool and a looser, more decorative knot count than city workshop pieces, which is exactly the right choice for a design this open. The back photo with the ruler shows the structure: a cotton foundation, clean straight rows, and plied warps running out into a hand-finished fringe. The wool has a soft matte sheen rather than a high gloss, it takes a vegetable dye evenly, and it wears well in a room that gets daily use. Among modern Oriental rugs, this is the kind of honest, well-made floor piece that does its job for decades.
