This is a brand new, never used Peshawar in the Ziegler manner, hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation and finished with the soft washed surface the Peshawar workshops are known for. At 8'9" x 11'8" it sits squarely in the most useful room size in the house, large enough to carry a full seating group or an 8 seat table with the chairs pulled back, and the drawing is calm enough that it will not fight the furniture above it. The pile is cut low and even, which lets the pattern read clearly from standing height while the surface stays quiet underfoot. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the wool pile and the country of origin.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler all over floral design: large open palmettes and rounded 8 petal rosettes strung on a loose vine that repeats up the length of the rug without a central medallion. Between the palmettes sit lanceolate leaves, small budded blossoms and split arabesque scrolls, drawn generously rather than tightly, so the eye moves across the whole surface instead of stopping in the middle. The border is a 3 band arrangement: a wide beige main band filled with reciprocal scrolling vinework and rosettes, framed by two narrow guard stripes of running leaf and blossom, then closed by a plain outer band that acts as a picture frame around the pattern. Corners are resolved properly on all 4 sides, with the vine turning cleanly rather than being cut off, which is the first thing to check on a rug of this type. Small irregularities in the repeat are the signature of hand drawing at the loom.

A Dusty Teal Blue Field With Faded Beige and Blush

The ground is a dusty teal blue with a distinctly soft, greyed sage cast, the kind of muted blue-green that changes character with the light in the room and never reads as a saturated color. Over it the palmettes and vines are worked in faded beige, straw gold and ivory, with a few motifs carried in warm taupe and grey-brown that give the pattern depth without contrast lines. The accent notes are the small blush and coral flower heads scattered through the field and repeated in the border rosettes, just enough warmth to keep the palette from going cold. The wide main border shifts to a pale sandy beige, while the outer band returns to the same soft teal, so the rug is bracketed in color from edge to edge. A gentle abrash runs through the ground, visible in the angled photographs as broad tonal bands, which is the natural result of hand spun wool taking dye at slightly different rates.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition

Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, has become one of the most reliable sources of good hand-knotted work in the world, and the Ziegler style it specializes in goes back to the 19th century, when European trading houses commissioned open, softly colored floral designs scaled for large Western rooms. Weavers here work on cotton warps with hand spun wool, knot by hand at a comfortable village density, then clip the pile low and finish the rug with a wash that mellows the dyes and gives the wool its characteristic quiet sheen. The back, shown in the fold photograph, is even and legible, with straight rows and tidy selvedges, and the natural fringe is a continuation of the warp rather than something added afterward.
