8'9" x 11'9" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Ivory All Over Floral Field | Sage Green Border | Excellent Condition

This 8'9" x 11'9" Chobi Peshawar rug is knotted one knot at a time in hand-spun highland wool, with an open ivory field of flowering vines framed by a soft sage green border. It is a true room size piece and sits squarely in the 9x12 Oriental rugs range, wide enough to carry a full seating group while the drawing still reads as one calm composition. The dye work is natural, which is why the greens, olives and caramels look settled into the wool rather than printed on top of it. Condition is excellent, and the rug ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver worked an all over floral lattice of thin brown vine stems that travel the full length of the field, budding into broad fan palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated leaves and small hooked blossoms. The scale is generous and deliberately airy, so the ivory ground stays visible between the motifs and the rug never looks busy. Four corners repeat the same vine turn, a sign the layout was drawn to the rug rather than cut off at the edge. The main border carries large palmette heads and curling leaf cartouches on green, pinned between two caramel guard stripes of reciprocal flower heads, and the inner guard runs a fine meandering vine that keeps the field and border visually separate.

Ivory Field and Soft Green Border

The field is a warm ivory with a faint cream and oatmeal movement through it, the natural abrash of hand-spun wool taking dye unevenly, and it gives the surface a soft glow under lamplight. Against that ground the vines read in dusty brown and tea caramel, the palmettes in olive and sage with apricot and faded rose centers, and small flower heads drop in deep navy for contrast. The wide border shifts to a pale green with a cool, almost blue-grey cast, closer to sage and celadon than to a saturated green, and its own flowers come up in cream, gold, salmon and that same dark navy. The whole palette is low contrast and neutral, which makes this piece easy to live with next to white walls, oak floors, linen upholstery or brass, and a strong option if you are shopping ivory and beige area rugs.

Peshawar Weaving and Hand-Knotted Quality

Chobi weaving is centered on Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, where the workshops built their reputation on hand-spun wool from the highland flocks, natural dyes and the restrained classical drawing collectors associate with this style. Peshawar is one of the places doing the best contemporary hand-knotted work anywhere today, and a well made Chobi is a genuine Oriental rug in the full sense of the term. The back photograph shows the structure clearly: tight, even rows on a cotton foundation, the pattern legible from the reverse, and straight selvedges with no pull along the sides. The pile is clipped low enough to hold the fine vine work crisp while leaving the wool dense underfoot, and the hand-spun yarn gives it the springy, slightly glossy handle that washes well and only improves with traffic.
