9'10" x 13' Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Wool and Silk Floral Medallion | 60 Raj, Never Used

This is a workshop-grade Tabriz woven in the 2000s and never put on a floor, which is why the ivory ground still reads clean and the pile still stands up sharp at the edges. At 9'10" x 13' it sits in the most useful of the large formats, and among 10 x 13 Persian rugs it is one of the finer weaves we carry, roughly 400 knots per square inch with silk drawn through the flowers and the medallion outlines. Wool pile on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted, and light enough underfoot to move without a crew. It ships with a certificate of authenticity that records origin, materials and knot count.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Tabriz floral medallion laid over a field that never goes quiet. A navy lobed medallion sits at center, with a pale sage cartouche inside it and a small rosette at the very middle, framed by a coral halo of curling leaves and 2 pendant finials running up and down the length. The 4 corner spandrels answer the medallion in the same navy and coral, and the rest of the ivory field carries an all-over system of split palmettes, curled saz leaves, carnations and thin scrolling vines that meet in perfect mirror symmetry across both axes. The main border is a broad coral band of alternating palmettes and flowering stems, held between light blue guard stripes of small rosettes and a fine outer meander. Look at the close-up photograph and you can see how tightly the outlines are drawn, single-knot lines that curve rather than step, which is only possible at this knot count.

Color

The field is ivory leaning warm cream, and it is the reason this rug lightens a room instead of anchoring it in the usual reds. Against that ground the palette runs peach and coral through the main border, which shifts between salmon and soft terracotta depending on where the light falls, with the silk-highlighted flowers picking up a pink rose tone. The medallion supplies the depth: a near-black navy that grounds the center, softened by a sub-medallion in pale green. Through the field you get muted sage and celadon greens in the leafwork, cornflower and steel blue in the small blossoms, touches of old gold and a dull burgundy in the palmette hearts. Nothing shouts. The silk catches the light at an angle and lifts the coral and blue a half tone, which is clearest in the angled floor photographs, and the whole scheme sits comfortably with warm wood, off-white walls and antique brass.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, the place where the master workshops trained the draftsmen everyone else copied. Fineness there is counted in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 in: 40 Raj is ordinary commercial goods, 50 is genuinely fine, and 60 Raj, which is where this piece sits at roughly 400 knots per square inch, is the grade collectors look for. That count is what allows the curved outlines, the small individual blossoms and the unbroken vine work seen here, none of which survive at a coarser weave. The back photograph shows an even, tight grid with no pulled rows, the selvages are original and the ivory cotton fringe is untouched, all consistent with a rug that was woven, sold and stored rather than used.
