This is a hand-knotted Oriental rug in wool with silk highlights, woven in China to a classic Tabriz cartoon and never put on a floor. The pile is dense and tightly clipped, the drawing is fine enough to carry curved vine work without the lines breaking, and the silk is used sparingly on petals and leaf tips where it catches light. Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral composition rather than a medallion layout, so there is no single focal point competing with your furniture. A small 8 petal rosette sits at the exact center, and from it the drawing spreads outward in mirrored halves: scrolling vines, split palmettes, serrated saz leaves, tight clusters of blossoms and large curling paisley boteh that anchor each quarter of the field. Pairs of crowned palmette groups mark the head and foot of the field on the long axis. The main border carries a slow rhythm of rosettes and lotus palmettes on a meandering vine, flanked on both sides by narrow ivory guard bands of small flowers and leafwork, with a plain black outer edge finishing the rug and ivory cotton fringe at both ends.

The ground is a true black, not a very dark navy, which is what gives the rug its contrast. Against it the flowers are drawn in dusty rose, salmon, soft coral and clean ivory, with pale blue and grey blossoms scattered through for cooling and small notes of teal green in the leaves and stems. The main border switches the balance completely: a warm rose pink ground carrying ivory, wine, brown and green florals, so the rug reads dark in the center and soft around the edge. Origin, Weave and Quality

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that produces fine hand-knotted floor coverings to Tabriz cartoons. Tabriz drawing is unforgiving: the curved vine, the tapering leaf and the outlined petal only hold together at a high knot count, and a coarse weave turns those curves into steps. Here the knotting is fine and even, the outlines stay crisp at the smallest blossoms, and the selvedges and fringe are hand-finished. The foundation is cotton, which keeps a rug of this size flat and stable, while the wool and silk pile gives both durability underfoot and sheen where the design needs it. The condition is new and unused, with full pile height throughout.
