Most Kashans arrive with a red field and a navy medallion. This one does the opposite: an ivory ground carries an all over lattice of rosettes and palmettes edge to edge, with no central medallion competing for attention, so the pattern reads as one continuous garden across the full 9'2" x 12'6". The pile is fine wool on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted in central Persia, and the surface still has its original luster with even, undisturbed nap throughout. Design and Motifs

The field is built on a repeating lattice of stepped, angular cartouches, each one filled with an 8 petal rosette and set on a diagonal grid so the eye moves across the rug rather than settling in one spot. Alternating rows shift the anchor color between deep blue and saffron gold, with smaller 8 point stars and tulip forms dropped into the gaps between them. Fine leafy vine scroll, curling paisley tips and small serrated leaves fill every remaining inch of ground, drawn with a light hand so the ivory still breathes through. The border system is unusually generous for this format: a wide ivory main band carrying paired diamond cartouches and flowering stems, framed on both sides by narrow blue guard stripes with running rosette chains, and finished with slim reciprocal outer lines that keep the whole composition tight. Corner resolution is clean, with the border pattern turning properly at all 4 corners rather than being cut off.

A Pale Ivory Ground Lit by Blue and Gold

The ground is a soft ivory that leans toward cream and warm oatmeal depending on light, and it makes up the majority of the surface. Against it, the two lead colors are a medium slate blue, used in both a denser midnight tone inside the rosettes and a chalky powder blue in the vinework, and a warm mustard gold that reads almost antique brass where the pile catches the light. Accents come in small, deliberate doses: rose pink and raspberry in the flower centers, a clear tomato red in the star rosettes, sage and olive green in the leaves, and a dusty camel that ties the border into the field. There is no harsh contrast anywhere, which is what gives the rug its calm, faintly faded look while the individual colors stay clean and unmuddied. Kashan: Central Persia and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its workshops trace back to the Safavid court looms that set the standard for Persian floral drawing. The town's advantage has always been material: soft, lustrous local wool that takes dye deeply and holds a sheen for decades under foot. Weaving is done on a cotton foundation with a firm, tightly packed knot, which is why a Kashan of this age still shows crisp outlines on motifs only a few knots wide, visible in the close-up photographs of the rosettes and the reverse. This piece is the quieter, more collectible side of that tradition, an all over layout on ivory rather than the familiar red medallion, and it has been kept in excellent condition with full pile and sound, even selvedges.
