9'8" x 12'8" Modern Oriental Rug | Rust & Navy All-Over Striation Design | Hand-Knotted Wool, New

This 9'8" x 12'8" hand-knotted wool rug commits to one idea and carries it across the entire floor without a border, a medallion or a single repeated motif. Short navy and blue-black knots are set into a rust ground in wavering vertical columns that lean, gather and separate as they travel, so the surface behaves more like weather than pattern. It is brand new, never walked on, woven in wool on a cotton foundation, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction and the origin. Buyers cross-shopping 10x13 area rugs will notice how rare it is to find something this graphic at room scale, and among modern and contemporary rugs it sits in the small group that still earns its price through hand knotting rather than printing or tufting.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft diagonal shadows across the flat overhead photo are fold marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage, and they relax once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before shipping. The shimmering, wave-like effect you see in the wide shots is the design itself, an optical ripple created by thousands of short knots changing direction, and it moves with the light as you walk past.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a true all-over design, edge to edge, with no border and no corner resolution to interrupt it. Look closely at the pile shots and the structure becomes clear: each dark mark is a tiny dash, 2 or 3 knots long, stacked into slender columns. Those columns tilt slightly from row to row, which sends a chevron rhythm running up the field, then breaks it, then reforms it a few inches later. The result is somewhere between an ikat blur and a herringbone, with passages that read almost like animal striping and others that dissolve into pure texture. Because nothing is symmetrical, the rug never announces a front or a back, and it can be rotated in a room without losing its balance. The plain selvedge and short ivory fringe are the only quiet elements, framing the field by doing nothing at all.

A Rust Ground Worked Against Navy and Blue-Black

The ground is a warm rust orange that shifts with the light, closer to copper and apricot where the pile catches the sun and closer to terracotta in the shaded passages. Against it the weaver has used two distinct darks rather than one: a saturated indigo navy that pools into broad shadows, and a colder blue-black used for the fine dashes. That second tone is what gives the field its depth, because the eye reads the near-black marks as foreground and the navy as a layer sitting just behind them. Where the two darks overlap, the rug goes almost midnight; where they thin out, the rust runs clean and bright across several inches. Ivory appears only at the selvedge and fringe. In a room this palette does heavy lifting: it warms up grey floors and pale walls, and it sits comfortably with walnut, brass, leather and charcoal upholstery.

Woven in Pakistan, Knotted by Hand in Wool

Pakistan is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted work at this size and this level of finish for the contemporary market, and this piece shows why. The knotting is even from end to end across 12'8", the sides are firm, and the pile has enough body to stand up under a dining table or a sofa front without crushing. The wool is glossy rather than dry, which is what makes the rust read so warm in the photographs. Structurally it follows the same logic as any classic Oriental rug, with a cotton warp and weft and a wool pile tied knot by knot, but the cartoon is entirely modern, which is exactly the combination collectors and designers keep asking for. Brand new, unwalked, and built to be lived on for decades.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
