This 9'8" x 14' rug was hand-knotted in Jaipur on a cotton foundation with a natural wool pile, and it is the kind of piece buyers look for when they want the drawing of a 19th century workshop Oriental rug without buying something already worn thin. It is new, never used, and in perfect condition, with full pile, straight sides and clean ivory cotton fringe at both ends. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all-over floral design rather than a central medallion, so the pattern repeats evenly from end to end and reads well from any seat in the room. Thin curving vines run the length of the rug and carry large cream palmettes, split serrated leaves, small rosettes and tulip heads, with a repeating blue and cream vase motif anchoring each vertical axis (visible up close in the detail photographs). The wide main border is drawn on beige with paired cloud bands, leafy scrolls and dark burgundy blossoms, then framed on both sides by narrow zigzag guard stripes worked in green, slate blue and ivory. The outer edge finishes in solid red, and the 4 corners resolve cleanly, which is a good sign of a careful cartoon and disciplined weaving.

Color: Deep Red Field Against a Golden Beige Border

The ground is a deep red that shifts toward burgundy where the pile leans away from the light and toward a warmer crimson where it leans into it, an abrash-like play you can see clearly in the angled photographs. Against that red, the vinework is drawn in soft beige and cream, olive and moss green, muted slate blue and a darker navy, with black used sparingly as an outline to keep each flower crisp. The main border is a golden beige that lifts the whole rug and keeps the red from feeling heavy, and its motifs repeat the same greens, blues and burgundies found in the field. Ivory highlights on the larger palmettes give the field its brightest points, and the overall palette sits comfortably with warm woods, leather, brass and cream walls.

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the main weaving centers of India and the source of much of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work.
