9'9" x 12'7" Persian Rug | Classic Medallion Design | Dense Wool Pile, Excellent Condition

This is the Persian room-size rug most buyers picture before they ever start shopping: a deep red field carrying fine floral vinework from edge to edge, a navy lobed medallion with an ivory and sky blue heart, matching navy spandrels in the 4 corners, and a wide navy main border held between pale blue and salmon guard stripes. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, and the 3/8" pile is still dense and even underfoot with no thin spots in the field. At 9'9" x 12'7" it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table with chairs pulled out, which puts it in the most practical band of 10x13 Persian rugs. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Persian piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A few soft fold lines and shadows are visible across the field in some photos. These come from the rug being rolled and stacked on a pallet in our warehouse. They are not wear, not fading and not damage, and they relax out once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic central Persian formula and follows it well. A navy lobed medallion sits dead center, stepped in toward an ivory cartouche and a small sky blue rosette at its core, with slender pendants reaching north and south into the field. Around it the red ground is filled with a curving allover lattice of palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated lanceolate leaves and fine split vine, drawn small enough that the pattern reads as texture from standing height and as hundreds of separate blossoms when you sit on the floor. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the medallion's navy ground with ivory and pale blue flowerheads, so the composition closes cleanly at every corner. The main border runs a stately navy vine of alternating palmettes and rosettes, flanked by a light blue inner guard of climbing floral sprays and a salmon and ivory outer band of small repeating blossoms, 7 bands of pattern in total from field to selvage.

Color: Deep Red, Navy and Ivory

The field is a true tomato red, warm rather than brown, and it carries the slight natural tonal movement you want to see in wool dyed in batches. Against it the navy of the medallion, spandrels and main border reads almost black in low light and resolves into deep indigo in daylight, which is what gives this rug its contrast across a big room. Ivory does the lifting work: it outlines the medallion, fills the cartouche and runs through the floral sprays so the pattern never goes muddy. Secondary tones include a soft sky blue in the guard border and medallion center, salmon and dusty rose in the outer band, saffron gold in the larger palmettes, and small touches of sage green and aubergine in the vine. It is a saturated, confident palette that sits comfortably with dark wood, leather and brass, and it belongs to the most requested family of red Persian rugs.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was woven in Persia in the medallion tradition of the central weaving towns, the same formula of red ground, navy lobed medallion and ivory spandrels that made Kashan workshops famous and that still defines what most people mean by a Persian rug. The construction is town work rather than village work: a flat, even cotton foundation, straight sides, square corners, and an asymmetrical knot pulled tight enough to hold the curved vine and the fine outlining without the drawing going jagged. The back shows clean, regular knot nodes and crisp color definition, which is the honest test of a well-woven piece. The 3/8" wool pile is dense and springy, the kind of fleece that takes furniture legs and foot traffic for decades and polishes rather than dulls with use, and at 9'9" x 12'7" it is a rug meant to be the fixed point of a main room for a very long time.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
