9'9" x 13'4" Persian Kashmar Rug | Red Field Floral Medallion | Khorasan Wool Pile, Excellent Condition

This 9'9" x 13'4" Persian Kashmar was hand-knotted in the Khorasan province of northeast Persia, in the town that gave the weave its name and that works within the wider Khorasan weaving tradition of Mashad. It is a full room-size piece with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, heavy enough to lie flat on its own and dense enough to take daily use without flattening. The drawing is formal and complete: a lobed central medallion with matching pendants, four corner spandrels, and a field of scrolling vines that fills every inch between them. Condition is excellent, with even pile across the full 13'4" length and clean, tight selvedges. Design and Motifs

The center holds a lobed medallion built around a small rosette, ringed by curling leaves and palmettes and finished top and bottom with narrow pendants that taper into the field. Four navy spandrels anchor the corners and carry the same vocabulary of palmettes, rosettes and split leaves, so the eye reads the medallion and the corners as one drawing rather than as separate panels. Across the open red ground the weaver has laid a continuous all-over vinery: thin ivory tendrils that loop and cross, studded with 8 petal rosettes, cypress-like leaf forms and small blossoms turned at different angles so the repeat never looks mechanical. The main border runs a dark ground with alternating cartouche-shaped palmettes and floral bouquets, framed on each side by a pair of narrow guard borders of running vine. The balance of open field to detail is what separates a good Kashmar from an ordinary one, and this piece holds that balance right through to the ends.

Color Palette

The field is a deep madder red that reads slightly cooler and more wine-toned near the medallion where the surrounding navy pulls against it. The main border is a dark indigo navy, nearly black in the photographs until the light catches it, and that depth is what makes the red field glow rather than shout. Ivory does the structural work throughout: it outlines the vines, edges the medallion lobes and forms the fine guard stripe that separates each border, giving the whole design its clarity. Inside that framework sit the softer notes, dusty salmon and rose in the large border palmettes and in the heart of the medallion, mid sky blue in the smaller blossoms, and scattered touches of olive, gold and warm brown in the leaves. The result is a red and navy rug at ten feet away and a genuinely multi-colored one at arm's length, which is why it sits comfortably with both traditional furniture and plainer modern rooms.
