This is a tapestry-style Aubusson in wool, woven flat with no pile, so the drawing sits on the surface like a painted panel rather than standing up in a plush. It measures 9' x 12'1", which lands squarely in the most useful of all 9x12 room size rugs, and it is a modern reading of the French 17th and 18th century Aubusson formula: an oval rose medallion, ribbon and rope framing, and open cream ground carrying the whole composition. Because there is no pile to crush, it sits low under doors and dining chairs and reads as a decorative textile as much as a floor covering. It is a handmade Oriental rug in the trade sense of the term, in perfect condition, never used, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The composition works in three concentric layers. At the center sits an oval cartouche outlined by a twisted gold rope and a loosely tied ribbon, holding a single full bouquet of open roses, small 5 petal blossoms and feathered foliage, with 4 smaller rose sprays set at the compass points. Around it runs a wide oval reserve carrying a continuous garland of rose clusters and slender leafy stems, broken at the top and bottom by a scrolled anthemion crest that reads like a footed urn with acanthus volutes curling away on both sides. Outside that oval, the 4 corner spandrels open into airy gold rococo scrollwork, each one anchored by a rosette and a ribbon knot, with the same scroll vocabulary repeated so the 4 corners answer one another exactly. A plain wide gold band frames the whole field, finished with a narrow braided guard stripe on the outer edge. It is a formal, symmetrical, distinctly French drawing, and the generous empty ground is what keeps it from feeling busy.

A Palette Built on Beige, Gold and Rose

The ground is a warm beige that shifts between pale cream in the medallion reserve and a deeper sand tone across the oval, the sort of quiet base that makes this a natural fit for rooms decorated in beige and ivory rugs. The border and all the scrollwork are a soft antique gold, closer to honey than to yellow, with the thicker outer band reading almost tobacco where the light catches the weave. The flowers carry the color: shell pink and salmon roses shaded to a dusty rose center, with a few deeper burgundy accents scattered through the garlands. Leaves and stems are a muted sage and celadon green with olive shading, never bright. The ribbon that loops around the central cartouche is a chalky powder blue, the one cool note in the whole rug, and it is what lifts the palette out of pure neutral. Close up, the flat tapestry weave shows fine vertical ridging that gives each color a slight grain, so the field never looks like a solid printed panel.

The Aubusson Tradition, Hand-Woven in China

Aubusson is a town in the Creuse valley of central France whose workshops were granted royal manufactory status in the 17th century and spent the next two hundred years weaving flat tapestry rugs for chateaux and salons, working alongside the pile Savonnerie looms. The style has outlived the original ateliers, and today the best hand-woven flat weave Aubusson work comes out of established Chinese workshops, which is where this rug was made. Honest origin, and honest quality with it: the wool is well spun and evenly dyed, the tapestry weave is tight and straight, the curved lines of the rope and the scrolls hold their shape without stepping, and the 4 corners resolve symmetrically, which is the real test of a drawing this formal. Because the structure is flat and dense with no pile to shed or mat, it wears extremely well and lies almost completely flush to the floor.
