Square Rugs
Square rugs are genuinely rare, and the reason is simple. Looms make rectangles, rooms are almost never square, and nobody wove squares speculatively. Almost every square hand-knotted rug on the market was either ordered for a particular room or made recently for a market that asks for the shape. The choice here is narrow, and it is worth knowing that before falling for a photograph.
Why the supply is thin
Traditional weaving formats follow function, and the functions were long: a rug for the head of a room, a rug for the side, a prayer rug, a bag face. None of them is square. The square appears in old weaving mainly as a central piece in a room set, and those are scarce and usually separated from the set. Everything else is a special order, which means a workshop with a wide loom rather than a village or tribal weaver. In practice that puts most square stock in modern and transitional production, in Chinese weaving, in the natural-dye revival rugs sold as Ziegler and Chobi, and generally among new rugs rather than old ones.
Ask for the measurement, not the label
The trade uses square loosely. A rug described as square may be 8 by 9 or 9 by 10, and at that scale a foot of difference is obvious once it is down. Always ask for both dimensions in inches. Expect some discrepancy in any case: a hand-knotted rug is woven under tension on a wooden frame and is normally an inch or two out of true, sometimes more at one end than the other. A rug that measures dead square on every diagonal was not made by hand.
Where a square is the right answer
Under a square or round dining table, where a rectangle leaves two corners of table with no rug beneath the chairs. In a square room, a conversation grouping of four chairs, a wide landing, or a garden room with doors on two sides. Anywhere the furniture has no dominant axis, a square stops the room arguing with itself. The 24-inch clearance rule still applies at a table: a square table 4 feet across wants at least 8 feet of rug.
The alternatives
For a round table, a round rug is often easier to source than a square one and does the same job. For a square room, a large rectangle set with an even border of floor on all four sides reads better than most people expect, and the choice is incomparably wider: see rectangular rugs, the 6x9 band, and the other formats at rug shapes. Whatever the shape, in a room that takes traffic the fibre matters more than the outline, and that means wool.
