10' x 14'2" Chinese Kashan Design Rug | All Over Floral Black Field | 160 Line, Never Used
This is a hand-knotted 160 Line wool rug, made in China to the classic Kashan drawing, and it has never been on a floor. The pile stands a full 3/8" high with no shading, no crushing and no traffic lanes, and the ivory cotton fringe in the back photograph is still tight and even, knot by knot. What sells this piece in person is the contrast: a true black ground carrying an unbroken garden of coral roses, ivory rosettes and sage leaves, framed by a wide ivory border that keeps the whole thing from reading heavy. At 10 feet wide it is a genuine room-size piece, and buyers shopping our 10x14 rugs will find very few dark-ground florals with this much surviving pile. Every rug we ship, including this one, leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver worked a mirrored all over field, the layout most associated with the Kashan design: thin scrolling vines curl out from the center line in opposing pairs, and every curl carries a flower. Count the vocabulary in the close-up and you get open coral roses, 8 petal ivory rosettes, small budded sprays, tulip forms and long serrated leaves in 2 tones of green, with tiny blue cluster blossoms filling the last gaps. One small silvery starburst rosette marks dead center, which is the only concession to a medallion anywhere on the rug. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a slim vine stripe against black, a periwinkle arrowhead guard, then the wide ivory main border with alternating rose bouquets and standing floral vases, mirrored again on the second guard and closed by a narrow black edge stripe. Corners resolve cleanly, which is a fair test of whether a drawing was followed or improvised.
Black Ground, Coral Roses and an Ivory Frame
The field is a deep flat black, dark enough that in the floor photographs it reads almost like a lacquer panel, and that is what makes the flowers glow. The dominant accent is coral rose, a warm salmon pink that repeats at regular intervals across the whole field, supported by soft ivory and cream in the smaller rosettes. Leaves swing between a cool teal green and a dusty sage, and there are quieter notes of periwinkle blue, pale lavender and a dark burgundy that you only pick up close. The border reverses the scheme completely: an ivory, almost buttermilk ground with the same coral, sage and blue palette drawn over it, so the rug ends in light rather than dark. Practically, that means the piece anchors a room with pale walls or oak flooring without going murky, and it hides ordinary household soil far better than an ivory-field rug of the same size. The 3/8" pile has enough body to keep the colors saturated under lamplight rather than going flat.
Origin, Weave and Line Count
This rug was woven in China, and we say so plainly. Kashan is a city in central Persia whose all over floral drawing became one of the most copied layouts in the trade, and Chinese workshops built entire programs around reproducing it faithfully on a cotton foundation with a wool pile. Chinese quality is graded by line count rather than Raj, and 160 Line sits in the fine tier of that system, roughly 175 knots per square inch, which is why the vines here stay thin and the rosettes keep their petal detail instead of blurring into blocks. The back photograph shows the payoff: small, even knots in tidy rows, a straight selvage and hand-tied fringe finished off the warps. Anyone weighing up how a Chinese Oriental rug compares with a town piece from the design's home city will find the distinction worth reading before buying. What you are getting for the money is a 10 foot by 14 foot 2 inch hand-knotted floral in new perfect condition, at a price no comparable workshop piece from central Persia reaches.
