Design and Motifs

The layout is a true all over floral design rather than a medallion piece, so the eye keeps moving instead of settling on one center point. Look closely and you can see the structure the weavers followed: a spine of navy palmettes running up the center line of the field, large split palmettes and rosettes on either side, curled saz leaves in olive and gold, and thin arabesque vines linking them all together. Ivory and gold blossoms sit in the gaps, with small 4 petal and 8 petal rosettes filling the smallest openings. The 4 corners of the field carry heavy gold and olive spandrel palmettes that anchor the composition, and the main navy border alternates a serrated red palmette with a gold boteh-style cone, each separated by small stemmed flowers. Two narrow red guard stripes and a beaded ivory minor border keep the transition from field to border crisp, and the wide camel-gold inner band gives the pattern room to breathe before the navy takes over.
