This is a big, quiet, seriously well drawn Oriental rug in a room size that very few handmade pieces reach. At 11'8" x 14'7" it is hand-knotted in 100% wool on a cotton foundation, with a warm olive brown field, a near black main border and an all over antique floral drawing that repeats without ever quite repeating. It has never been used, the pile stands full and even edge to edge, and the fringes and selvages are intact as woven. Among oversize rugs this one is unusually easy to live with, because the ground tone is soft enough to sit under furniture rather than fight it. Design and Motifs

The field is an all over composition built on a lattice of thin curving vines that carry large serrated palmettes, lotus heads, open rosettes and long feathered leaves across the whole surface. Cloudbands in ivory and pale gold loop between the larger flowers and break up the repeat, so the eye keeps moving instead of locking onto one axis. Look closely at the center and you will find a crisp 8 petal rosette in ivory and black, one of several small, precisely drawn accents scattered through the ground. The main border runs a classic turtle palmette and vine scheme on black, with 4 corners resolved cleanly rather than cut short, flanked by a narrow ivory guard stripe on the inside and a wider olive floral band on the outside. It is an antique inspired drawing executed with modern consistency: no wandering lines, no lazy corners.

A Study in Olive Brown, Black and Rust

The field reads as a warm olive brown, closer to caramel and bronze where the light hits the pile straight on and deeper, almost tobacco, where the wool lies away from you. Against that ground the palette is deliberately antique in feeling: soft peach and ivory in the flower heads, muted teal and dusty blue in the small leaves and cusped shields, olive and moss green in the vines, and dark burgundy and rust in the flower centers and calyxes. The border does the heavy lifting on contrast, a true black ground that makes the peach, sage and rust palmettes glow, edged by a thin ivory line and an outer olive band that returns to the field tone. Every color here is low chroma and slightly dusted, which is why the rug sits comfortably with leather, walnut, brass and stone rather than demanding a whole palette of its own.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great hand-knotting centers of the world today, and India is where most of the best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. The weavers there work from cartoons based on classical antique drawings, using hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, and the discipline shows in the back of this piece: rows are straight, the knot count is consistent from one end to the other, and the design holds its proportions across nearly 15 feet of length, which is where lesser looms go crooked. The wool has a firm, slightly lustrous handle and a medium pile height, cut evenly so the outlines stay sharp. A rug this size represents many months on a wide loom with several weavers working shoulder to shoulder, and it was made to be walked on for generations.
