12' x 14' Brown Chobi Peshawar Rug | All Over Willow Tree & Vase Design | Hand-Knotted Wool
This is a true room-size piece, 12' x 14' of hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, woven in the Chobi Peshawar tradition with a deep brown field and a wide ivory border. The drawing is quiet and architectural rather than showy: staggered rows of flowering trees and slim vase forms climb the field with no medallion to break the rhythm, which is exactly what makes it work under a big seating group or a long dining table. The wool has the low, even sheen of a well spun fleece, the pile is uniform from end to end, and the side cords and hand-tied fringe are intact with no wear. It is one of the easier pieces to place among large 12x14 area rugs because the brown ground reads as a warm neutral in almost any light. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is a classic willow and cypress repeat, drawn as alternating pairs: broad blossoming trees built from grids of tiny 5 petal flowers, weeping willow sprays that hang in fine vertical strands, and tall slender vase forms filled with dotted lattice. Each row is offset against the one above it, so the eye travels diagonally across the field instead of stopping at a center point, a hallmark of a well planned all over design. Small leafy sprigs and scattered buds fill the brown ground between the trees so no area feels empty. The main ivory border runs a turning vine of large palmettes, serrated leaves and rounded rosettes, punctuated at intervals by dark cartouche-like blossoms, and it is framed by a rust guard stripe, a soft blue reciprocal band and several fine ivory minor stripes, giving 4 clean layers of containment around the field.
A Deep Brown Field With Ivory, Rust and Soft Blue
The ground is a dark coffee brown with a warm, slightly reddish undertone that lifts toward chestnut where the light strikes the pile and settles to near espresso in the shadow. Against it the trees are worked in three separate tones: a dusty salmon to terracotta rose, a pale celadon blue-green that reads almost powder blue in the close-up, and a chalky ivory with faint apricot dotting. Leaf work and stems are drawn in olive and sage green with dark brown outlining, which keeps the pattern legible without hard contrast. The main border is a soft cream to buttery ivory carrying rust, brick red, sage and touches of the same pale blue, while one guard stripe is a distinct light blue-grey that echoes the tree tones and ties the border back to the field. The overall palette is muted and earthy, the kind of range collectors look for in brown area rugs that need to live with wood floors and leather.
Peshawar Weaving and Chobi Quality
Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, has been a serious weaving center for decades, and the Chobi group is its best known output. Chobi means wood color, a reference to the subdued, timber-toned palette these workshops build their reputation on. The work is hand-knotted on a cotton warp and weft, row by row on the loom, with hand spun wool that takes dye unevenly in the best way, giving the gentle tonal movement you see across the brown field here. Drawing at this scale is the hard part: holding a staggered tree repeat straight and consistent across 12 feet of width takes a proper cartoon and a disciplined weaver, and the rows here stay square from selvage to selvage. For buyers comparing this to the classical eastern weaving traditions, it sits firmly in the hand-knotted Oriental rug family, built by hand and made to be walked on for generations.
