13' x 13' Round Ziegler Chobi Rug | Beige & Light Gold All Over Palmette Design | Natural Wool Pile

A true 13' x 13' circle is a rug most weavers never attempt, because a round loom piece has to hold its curve knot by knot with no straight edge to correct against, and any drift shows immediately in the border rings. This one is hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation, and the outline in images 3 and 4 runs clean and even the whole way around. The field is a quiet beige that carries light gold, soft blue and touches of peach across an open all over drawing, the classic Ziegler Chobi vocabulary. It arrives in perfect condition, never used, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a true all over design with no central medallion, which is exactly what a round floor plan wants: the pattern reads correctly from every chair in the room. Slim gold vines arc across the field and carry large shield-shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and split leaves that curl back on themselves, with small stars and serrated leaflets filling the spaces between, as seen clearly in image 5. Because the field is left open, each blossom has room to breathe rather than crowding its neighbor. The border system is three rings deep: a broad main band of alternating palmettes and long lancet leaves, framed on both sides by a narrow peach and ivory guard stripe set with small tulip heads and rosettes, all following the curve without a single awkward corner turn. Image 7 shows the scale of the larger palmettes, where a single blossom spans a hand's width and is outlined in deep red to keep the soft colors defined.

A Neutral Palette of Beige, Light Gold and Soft Blue

The ground is a warm sand beige that shifts subtly with the nap, lighter toward the center and deepening to a light gold through the main border. Against it the weaver worked soft blue in two registers, a dusty teal for the larger palmette hearts and a paler powder blue for the small rosettes and curling leaf tips. Peach appears where it matters most, in the narrow guard stripe that outlines the field and again in the inner petals of several blossoms, warming the whole circle. Fine oxblood red is used only as an outlining color, drawn as thin as a pen line around leaves and flower heads, and sage green and ivory fill out the leaf work. There is no strong contrast anywhere, which is the point of this palette: the rug reads as a single field of warm neutral color from across a room and only reveals its blues and peaches close up. It will sit comfortably on oak flooring and beside cream upholstery without competing with anything.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Chobi Tradition

Peshawar is today one of the most accomplished hand-knotting centers in the world, and the Ziegler Chobi is its signature product. The design language goes back to the Manchester firm Ziegler & Co, which in the 1880s commissioned large carpets with open fields, oversized palmettes and muted colors made specifically for Western drawing rooms; Peshawar workshops revived that formula and built their reputation on it. Chobi refers to the soft, wood-toned natural dyeing these workshops favor, and the type is woven with hand-spun wool, which is why the ground color breathes and varies slightly rather than sitting flat. The back, shown in image 10, is even and clearly legible knot by knot, and the rolled edge in image 9 shows a dense, well-packed pile with a healthy sheen. At 13 feet across, this belongs with the oversized rugs that ship free in all 50 states, and round pieces of this diameter are made in very small numbers.
