5' x 18' Modern Indian Gallery Runner Rug | Ivory & Taupe Diamond Lattice | Brand New Rare Size

At 5' x 18' this is a wide gallery runner, a shape almost nobody weaves on purpose and almost nobody carries in stock. Most long runners stop at 2'6" or 3' wide, which leaves a 5 ft corridor, a gallery hall or a long open landing looking narrow and underdressed. This one is 60" across and 216" long, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, brand new and never walked on. The field is a quiet ivory to light gray that carries a single taupe lattice from one fringe to the other with no interruption, which is exactly why it works in a long space: there is no medallion to be cut in half by a doorway and no heavy border to fight the architecture. It sits comfortably alongside other modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs, though the construction is entirely traditional, and if you are weighing the difference between a hand-knotted Oriental rug and a machine-made lookalike, the back of this piece answers it immediately. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

These photos were taken on our warehouse floor under mixed overhead light. Some frames read cooler and grayer, one reads noticeably warmer and almost peach. That is the lighting, not a change in the rug. The true ground is a soft ivory leaning light gray, with motifs in taupe. The shadows across the length of the full-view shots are floor light, not wear and not fading. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a diamond trellis built from fine beaded lines, with a small ring or linked clasp knotted at every intersection where the diagonals cross. Inside the diamonds the weaver alternates two motifs across the whole 18 ft length: an 8 point star rosette with a hooked outline, and a lighter cross-shaped floret with 4 small buds. Between them sit tiny stylized sprigs and tulip heads that fill the negative space without crowding it. There is no main border and no medallion at all, just the all-over pattern running straight off the edges into a narrow dark outline and the plain ivory fringe. The repeat is deliberately small relative to the rug, so from standing height the whole thing reads as texture rather than as a pattern, and up close it resolves into distinct geometric flowers.

A Two Tone Neutral: Ivory, Light Gray and Taupe

This is essentially a 2 color rug, and the restraint is the point. The ground is an undyed-looking ivory that shifts between cream and a cool light gray depending on where the light hits it, with faint natural abrash from one section of wool to the next. Every motif is worked in a single taupe, a gray-brown that reads warm against the ivory in daylight and almost mushroom gray under lamps. The beaded lattice lines are drawn in the same taupe but thinner, so they sit one step back from the rosettes and give the field depth. There is no red, no blue, no gold anywhere in it. That makes it unusually easy to place: it takes oak, walnut and limestone floors equally well, and it will not argue with existing upholstery, art or wallpaper the way a classical red and navy runner would.

Hand-Knotted in India, Woven to a Rare Loom Width

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this runner shows why. The knotting is even and tight enough to hold the thin lattice lines straight over 18 continuous feet, which is the real test on a piece this long: any drift in tension shows up immediately as a wandering diagonal, and here the diagonals stay true from end to end. The wool pile is clipped at a medium height with a soft, slightly matte handle, laid on a cotton foundation that keeps the runner flat and square. Setting a loom 5 ft wide and dressing it for an 18 ft run is a commitment few workshops make, which is why this size turns up so rarely. For a long gallery, a wide corridor or a stair landing that a standard 2'6" strip cannot cover, it solves a problem that is otherwise solved only by commissioning, and it belongs in the small group of genuinely wide hallway runner rugs that exist at all.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
