6' x 9' Wool and Silk Oriental Rug | Tabriz Floral Medallion Design | Tan, Rose and Sage | New

This is a workshop-grade hand-knotted Oriental rug made in China, woven in wool with silk drawn through the flowers and scrollwork so the pattern catches light as you walk past it. The field is a warm camel tan, the center medallion and corner spandrels are soft rose, and the borders run sage green over a tan ground. At 6' x 9' it is one of the most useful sizes we sell, and it is shown here flat on the showroom floor with nothing to hide: full pile, straight sides, clean ivory fringe, never used. Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Tabriz formula: an 8 petal rosette at the dead center of the field, ringed by a lobed rose medallion, then a wreath of small paisley cartouches and outlined palmettes that radiate out like spokes. A slender pendant drops from the top and bottom of the medallion, each one finished with its own little bouquet. The open field around it is not open at all once you look closely, it is filled with a fine curling vine carrying rosettes, carnations, tulip sprays and tiny leaf clusters, all outlined in charcoal so the shapes stay crisp against the tan. The 4 corners carry rose spandrels with sage cartouche motifs, and the main border repeats a linked vine of large rosettes and palmettes between narrow guard stripes of the same flowers scaled down. It is a curvilinear, formal design, drawn by someone who understood that a floral medallion only reads well when the line stays smooth.

A Warm Tan Field With Rose and Sage Green

The base note is camel tan, closer to wheat in daylight and warmer under lamplight, with a faint natural variation across the field that is normal in hand-dyed wool. Over that sit dusty rose and mauve in the medallion, the spandrels and the main border ground, a color that softens the whole piece rather than driving it. Sage green does the structural work: it frames the field, edges the medallion cartouches and repeats in the guard stripes and leafwork. The accents are where the rug gets its life, deep burgundy and raspberry red in the small rosettes, ivory and cream in the silk-picked petals, and charcoal to near black in the outlines and the small cloud-band flourishes. There is no bright white and no hard navy anywhere, so the palette stays quiet and works with warm woods, cream walls and brass. The silk sits mainly in the flower heads and vine tips, which is why the same rose looks pale from one end of the room and much deeper from the other.

Made in China to the Tabriz Weaving Tradition

Chinese workshops have been weaving this style for decades, taking the cartoon and the knot density of the Tabriz school and executing it on a cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile. The close photograph with the ruler shows what that buys you: small, tight, evenly packed knots, enough of them per inch to hold a curved vine and a 6 petal flower without the line breaking into steps. The pile is clipped low, which keeps the fine detail legible, and the selvages and fringe are finished by hand.
