8'11" x 11'10" Black Transitional Rug | All Over Coral and Gold Blossoms | Hand-Knotted Wool
This is a brand new hand-knotted wool rug woven in India, measuring 8'11" x 11'10" and drawn as one continuous garden with no border to interrupt it. The field is a deep, almost inky black, and across it drift oversized blossoms in coral, orange and warm gold linked by thin ivory vines. It reads as one of the more restrained modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs we carry: bold in color, quiet in structure, and sized to fill the same footprint most buyers shop when they look at 9x12 area rugs. Every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with the origin, materials and measurements recorded.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a true all over floral design, with no medallion, no spandrels and no framing border, so the pattern simply runs to the edge and stops. Large multi-petal rosettes, sunflower heads and layered chrysanthemum forms sit at irregular intervals, some open and flat, others drawn in profile. Between them the weaver ran slender vines that curl into tight spirals, tipped with serrated leaves, small buds and paired leaf sprays. Scale is the trick here: the biggest blossoms are the width of a hand, while the buds are barely an inch across, and that difference in scale keeps a borderless field from looking like wallpaper. Because there is nothing enclosing the pattern, furniture can sit anywhere on the rug without cutting off a border or hiding a medallion.
Color: Black Ground, Coral and Gold Bloom
The ground is black with a faint charcoal movement through it, the natural abrash of hand-spun wool taking dye at slightly different rates, visible in the close-up photographs as soft horizontal banding rather than a flat printed black. Against that dark ground the flowers carry a warm autumn range: apricot and soft gold in the petal tips, coral and burnt orange in the centers, and deeper rust and plum outlines that give each blossom its shape. A number of the larger rosettes are shaded in a muted sage and olive green, which cools the palette and stops the orange from taking over. The vines and smaller leaves are a pale ivory gold that glows against the black, and the ends finish in natural ivory cotton fringe. Under lamplight the wool picks up a distinct sheen and the coral tones read brighter; in daylight the rug settles into a darker, more graphic look.
Origin and Weaving Quality
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and this piece shows why. The knotting is even from end to end, the selvedges are tight and straight, and the back shows clean, regular rows with the design legible right through the foundation, the mark of a workshop weaving to a set standard rather than piecework. The pile is good quality wool with real body and spring underfoot, laid over a cotton foundation that keeps the rug flat and square. If you are weighing this against a traditional piece, the difference between an Oriental rug of this kind and a classical workshop weave is design language, not craft: this one is knotted by hand on a loom exactly the same way, and it will wear for decades.
