This 8'7" x 11'9" piece is a workshop-grade Sino Tabriz, hand-knotted in China with a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation, and it has never been on a floor. The drawing follows the classical Tabriz formula closely: a lobed central medallion with an ivory core, four corner cartouches, and a field packed edge to edge with flowering vine. What sets it apart from the usual pastel Chinese production is the palette, a deep pine green ground carrying berry red and rose, which is a far more serious, library-and-dining-room combination. Design and Motifs

The center holds a tall lobed medallion with a stepped, scalloped outline and a small ivory cartouche at its heart, filled with a single rosette and four curling leaf sprays. Around that core the medallion is worked in rose and berry red with fine ivory tracery, and it finishes top and bottom in a pair of scrolling cloud-band finials. The field itself is a true all-over floral composition rather than an open ground: rosettes, 8 petal blossoms, tulips, serrated palmettes and small pomegranate forms sit on a continuous thin vine that never breaks. Four ivory corner cartouches repeat the medallion's vocabulary at reduced scale. The main border is the best-drawn part of the rug, a blossoming branch in cream and sand running across berry red, flanked by slate blue guard stripes of paired flower heads and an outer sand-colored barber-pole stripe. The detail photographs show how small the individual blossoms are, which is the tell of a high-count workshop rug rather than a coarse commercial weave.

Color: Pine Green, Berry Red and Ivory

The ground is a dark pine green that reads almost black at a distance and opens up into clear bottle green where light crosses the pile, which makes this one of the more unusual green rugs in this size class. Against it the flowers run through brick, terracotta, coral, salmon and a soft dusty rose, with cooler notes of celadon, powder blue and pale lilac scattered through the leafwork so the field never turns muddy. The medallion shifts from a berry red outer field to rose and salmon shading, then to a cream and ivory center, giving a lit-from-within effect. The wide main border is a deep berry red, closer to oxblood in the corner shot, carrying an ivory blossom branch that outlines the whole rug in light. Slate blue and sand guard stripes separate every element, and the fringe and end finish are undyed ivory cotton. In a room with walnut or dark oak floors the green ground goes almost forest-dark; against pale wood, as in the showroom photographs, the red and ivory come forward.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Sino Tabriz refers to hand-knotted work produced in Chinese workshops using the classical Tabriz drawing vocabulary, medallion, corner cartouches and continuous floral vine, and the best of that production is genuinely fine. This example is single-knotted on a cotton warp and weft, with the pile clipped short at 3/8", which is what allows the small blossoms and thin vine lines to stay legible instead of blurring. The back shot with the ruler shows tight, evenly spaced rows and a straight selvage, and the rug lies flat with square corners and no drawn-in edges, all signs of a controlled loom and careful finishing. The wool takes dye cleanly and has a slight sheen on the surface, which is why these pieces are so often mistaken for wool and silk.
