9'1" x 15'9" Sultanabad Design Oriental Rug | Brown & Beige Ziegler Floral Vine | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New
A dark chocolate field that runs almost 16 feet is an unusual thing to find hand-knotted, and this 9'1" x 15'9" piece carries it without going heavy. It is a Sultanabad, or Ziegler, drawing: a loose, breathing floral vine spread across the whole field instead of a central medallion, worked in wool on a cotton foundation at a low to medium 3/8" pile. Brand new and never used, it is a proper hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a machine-made copy, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting the weave, materials and dimensions. At this length it is a great room, long living room or formal dining rug, and you can see the scale in our oversized rugs selection.
Design and Motifs
The field is a classic all-over pattern: thin gold vines climb from a shallow base and branch out into broad serrated palmettes, open rosettes, split leaves and small crescent buds, mirrored left to right along a central axis. Two large scrolling vase forms in soft green sit near the lower field with red drop centers, and shield-shaped cartouches float between the larger blossoms. The drawing is deliberately airy, so the brown ground stays visible between motifs and the pattern never gets busy. The wide beige main border changes rhythm completely, with upright cypress and flowering shrub motifs alternating along the run, each one small enough that the border reads as a garden strip rather than a repeat. Narrow guard stripes of boxed rosettes frame it on both sides, and a plain dark brown outer band finishes the edge before the ivory fringe.
Chocolate Brown with Gold, Sage and Coral
The field is a deep, slightly heathered brown that shifts between espresso and warm walnut as the light moves across the pile, which is the sign of wool dyed in small lots rather than flooded with a single flat color. Against it, the vine work is antique gold and honey, the palmettes come up in cream, soft coral and dusty salmon, and the vase forms and small leaves are a muted sage green. Tiny crimson centers appear inside the rosettes and vase cartouches, just enough red to sharpen everything around it. The border is a warm camel beige, lighter and sunnier than the field, with the cypress motifs picked out in pale blue-green and rust. Set together, the palette is earthy and low-contrast, easy against wood floors, leather and cream walls.
Sultanabad Weaving, Made in India
The Sultanabad or Ziegler style has been the workhorse of the decorative rug trade for well over a century, prized for large open floral fields that suit big rooms. This example was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made: the looms there produce clean selvedges, even knotting and consistent pile height at sizes this large, and the back of this rug shows it, with a tight, legible knot grid and no drawn-in waist. The wool is well spun and takes a soft luster after shearing, and the 3/8" pile is kept low enough that furniture sits level and doors clear. Woven on a cotton foundation with hand-tied fringes, it lies flat straight off the roll and is built to hold up under real traffic for decades.
