9' x 12' Oushak Rug | Ivory Field with Coral and Sage All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted in India
This is a brand new, never used 9' x 12' hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India in the classic Oushak idiom: a soft ivory and beige ground, an open all-over floral layout, and a wide ivory border carrying big coral rimmed rosettes. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, cut at a medium height so the drawing stays crisp while the surface keeps that slightly relaxed, lived-in handle that collectors associate with the Oushak look. At 108" x 144" it is a true room-size piece, large enough to sit under a full seating group or an 8 seat dining table with chairs pulled back. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, along with its full specifications.
Design and Motifs
The field runs as an all-over floral design with no central medallion, built on a lattice of scrolling vines that repeats up the length of the rug. Each repeat carries a ring of round rosettes with toothed petals, long serrated sickle leaves, split palmettes, small tulips and five petal blossoms, with tight clusters of red berries scattered between them to keep the open ground lively. Vertical anchor palmettes run up the center line, and the corners resolve cleanly where the vine turns into the inner guard. The main border is the signature element: ivory ground, large coral outlined medallion rosettes alternating with leafy paisley forms, framed by narrow guard stripes of rosettes and reciprocal cross motifs in gold and sage. It is a drawing with plenty of air in it, which is exactly why this pattern reads calm across a 9 foot by 12 foot floor instead of busy.
Colors: Beige, Coral, Sage Green and Gold
The ground is a warm beige that shifts toward cream in the field and toward soft ivory in the border, so the two zones separate without a hard color break. Against it the accents are deliberately muted: a coral red that reads closer to brick than to fire engine, used for berry clusters, rosette centers and the outlines of the big border medallions; a dusty sage green, sometimes cooling into grey green, that carries the leaves and vine work; and a warm camel gold that fills the border rosettes, the spandrel scrolls and the outer guard stripe. Touches of pale peach and taupe soften the transitions. The whole palette is earthy and low contrast, the kind of neutral that works with oak floors, linen upholstery and white walls, while the coral keeps it from going flat. Photographed in natural daylight, the field looks lighter; under warm lamps it deepens toward sand.
Origin and Weaving Quality: Hand-Knotted in India
This rug was knotted by hand in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done. The Indian workshops took on the Oushak design tradition and refined it: hand-spun quality wool, a disciplined cotton warp and weft, even beat-down across the full 9 foot width, and selvedges and fringe finished by hand as you can see in the corner photographs. Nothing here is machine made and nothing is tufted; the back shows an even, legible knot grid, which is what gives the rug its flat lie and its longevity. New condition means full pile height, no wear, no repairs and no sun fade, so the buyer gets the entire life of the rug. If you are comparing options in this footprint, it sits with our other 9x12 Oriental rugs as one of the softer, more neutral choices in the group.
