12'1" x 18'1" Jaipour Rug | Dark Olive All-Over Floral Field | Ivory Border | Hand-Knotted in India

This is a true palace piece: 145 inches wide by 217 inches long, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, and drawn in the Jaipour manner with a continuous floral field rather than a central medallion. At this scale the weaver has to keep the vine system in register across more than 18 feet of length, and the photographs show it holding true from end to end. The pile is still full and upright, the ivory fringe is intact, and the rug is in excellent condition. Because of its footprint it belongs with the 12x18 oversize rugs rather than any standard room size, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The field is a dark olive that photographs greener under daylight and browner under warm indoor light. Both readings are the same wool, unedited and unenhanced. The paper tag and the small numbered label visible in the final photographs are our warehouse identification tags and are removed before the rug ships.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all-over floral repeat built from large open palmettes, 8 and 10 petal rosettes and split leaves, all linked by a thin scrolling vine that runs corner to corner without a break. The palmettes alternate in size and coloring so the eye reads movement instead of a stamped grid, and small buds, curled leaves and tiny blossoms fill the ground between the larger heads. The main border is a wide ivory band of lobed cartouches holding fan-shaped palmettes and hooked leaves, flanked by narrow guard stripes of running boteh-like buds and reciprocal florets in sage and brown. A fine gold outline separates the border tiers and gives the whole frame a crisp edge, visible clearly in the angled border shots. This is a classic Oriental rug drawing tradition executed with a curvilinear, workshop-level line.

The Dark Olive Field and Its Ivory Frame

The ground is a deep dark olive with real brown depth in it, the kind of color that changes character across the day: greener in daylight, closer to bitter chocolate under lamps. Against that dark field the flowers sit in cream, bone white, wheat gold and pale butter yellow, with softer touches of rose, dusty pink, apricot and a light celadon green in the smaller leaves. Deeper burgundy appears in the palmette centers and again in the border blossoms, which keeps the palette warm rather than washed out. The main border reverses the scheme entirely, a light ivory to sand ground carrying burgundy, rose and olive flower heads, so the dark field is boxed by light and the rug reads much larger on the floor. The guard stripes bring in sage, khaki, rust and small flecks of sky blue. It is a low-contrast, earthy palette that works with walnut and oak furniture, bronze, brass and cream upholstery.

Jaipur Weaving and Knot Quality

Jaipour rugs come out of the Rajasthan weaving workshops around Jaipur, today the strongest center of hand-knotted production anywhere; most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made in India, and this rug is a fair example of why. The back photographs show clean, evenly packed rows with no slack or drawn-in areas, which is the real test on a rug of this length, and the cotton warps run straight from selvedge to selvedge. The wool is hand-spun, which is why the dyes break gently across the field instead of sitting flat, and the pile has that slightly lustrous handle you see in the close-up rolls. Sides are overcast in matching brown and the ends are finished with plain cotton fringe. For a room that needs a single floor covering measuring 12'1" x 18'1", this is a sound, well-drawn piece built to be walked on for decades.
