Design and Motifs

The layout is a classic Ziegler interpretation of a 19th century Persian workshop pattern, drawn open rather than crowded. There is no central medallion. Instead a slow arabesque vine travels the length of the field, carrying broad palmettes, curled saz leaves and small 8 petal rosettes that repeat on a generous grid, the hallmark of a proper all-over design. Look closely at the detail images and you will find tiny crimson and yellow flower heads set inside the larger blossoms, little points of saturated color that keep the surface from reading flat. The main border is wide and unhurried, filled with alternating palmettes and leafy vine turns, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of running floral scroll. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug this wide takes a cartoon that was planned properly before the first knot went down.

A Study in Beige, Gold and Soft Sage

The field is a warm sand beige that shifts toward honey gold under light, with the gentle horizontal banding of natural abrash that comes from hand-spun wool taking dye in slightly different strengths from batch to batch. Over that ground, the vines and palmettes are drawn in tan, camel and a muted sage green that reads more as soft olive than true green, with cocoa and walnut brown outlining the larger leaves. Small accents of deep red and clear yellow appear inside the rosettes and along the border, no more than a few percent of the surface, which is precisely what gives the neutral palette its depth. The main border sits a shade warmer than the field, and the outer guard band lightens again to cream, so the rug frames itself without any hard contrast line. Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is one of the great modern centers of the hand-knotted trade, where Afghan and Pakistani weavers work old Persian cartoons on wide looms using hand-spun highland wool. Chobi, from the word for wood, refers to the natural dye tradition these workshops are known for, which yields the muted, sun-softened tones you see here rather than the hard brights of machine-spun yarn.
